The boys’ universe finally has an official (and ironic) name

You either die a parody or live long enough to become a genuine article. That’s the incredibly fine line creator Eric Kripke’s “The Boys” has been walking since he unleashed the funhouse, mirror-filled superhero series in 2019. The Prime Video show has seen its fair share of ups and downs in the years since, culminating in a fifth and final season that looks like it will end the story on a high note. Through it all, “The Boys” has weathered writer and actor strikes, a pandemic, and even another Donald Trump presidency, all while mercilessly lampooning its Marvel and DC predecessors. At the same time, however, building its own shared universe of spin-offs and prequels has some detractors wondering if this satire has lost sight of the forest for the trees.

This latest development may or may not add fuel to the fire. Although “The Boys” is nearing its big conclusion, “Gen V” has already aired two seasons, perhaps the most dedicated fans will remember. animated show “The Boys: Diabolical” since canceledand there’s still the “Vought Uprising” prequel to come. Now we finally have a general name to refer to this growing shared universe. in a Substack post by Jack Shepherd of SFX Magazine (via total movie), it has been revealed that Prime Video is officially referring to this all-encompassing franchise as the Vought Cinematic Universe (VCU, for short). As Shepherd explained:

“Talking to Kripke this time [during a recent interview]spoke briefly about the expansion of the BCU… or, at least, I thought it was the BCU [Boys Cinematic Universe]. But I was wrong. Amazon clarified in a follow-up email after our print deadline that Kripke actually meant VCU or Vought Cinematic Universe. “In other words, the entire ‘Boys’ company has changed its name.”

Welcome to the Vought Cinematic Universe, the official name of The Boys franchise

Have we reached the event horizon, where the lines between traditional superhero properties and their deconstructions are blurred forever? Or is this the most “The Boys” thing this series could have done, taking direct aim at the MCU and the DC Universe in one last farewell for good? That’s probably up to the viewer, but the result remains the same: “The Boys” and its various spinoffs are now officially part of the Vought Shared Universe.

In an interesting quirk, it appears that the creative team behind “The Boys” (or perhaps Amazon’s corporate brass) decided to simplify their own terminology. At the beginning of his Substack post, Jack Shepherd clarifies that creator Eric Kripke and others connected to the series have previously referred to the overall universe as the BCU, or The Boys Cinematic Universe. Instead, everyone now follows the lead of the fictional in-universe company Vought as the primary link between each show. It’s a useful rebrand before the release of “Vought Uprising” later this year or next, though it remains to be seen whether that prequel will also include the horribly clunky meaning “The Boys Presents:” in its title, as “Gen V” does.

In any case, this revelation doesn’t really change everything. that a lot, at least not to anyone but us journalists, who now have another phrase to sprinkle throughout our coverage of “The Boys” and beyond. Either way, “The Boys” may end soon, but VCU is expected to live on for the foreseeable future. At this rate, it might even outlast the MCU and DCU. Homelander would appreciate the irony of that, huh?
